The Top 11 Perform on 3/18/08
What a brilliant/awful idea to expand on the theme from last week-tonight's theme is the Beatle's music...it could have gone either way, although I think it turned out to be a "never do this again" concept. I'm pretty sure there were new opening graphics and sounds, but more importantly, Simon was wearing a WHITE shirt. I kept waiting for an explanation and never got one, but after 7 seasons of black pants and a black t shirt, I expected SOMETHING to be said. Amanda Overmyer-Back in the USSR. Please go back to the USSR, Amanda. More toned down look in jeans and a normal top, less weirdness going on withthe hair, but Cruella is just not my kind of singer. Hated the performance, thought her version of the song was virtually unrecognizable, and yet Randy and Paula still think she's a treat. Bet me-she cuts an album, neither one of them will download a single song. Kristy Lee Cook-You've got to Hide Your Love Away. Tonight's fashion tip #! (take this in context since it is coming from a woman who owns underwear older than Kristy Lee) A glittery dress does not really go with cowboy boots, even if they have high heels. Not sure what fashiop statement she was trying to make-I'm more sophisticarted that the farm girl I used to be, or I'm still a farm girl in spite of the glitter....her voice is really pretty weak-the song was quite monotonous and a bit too low for her to do comfortably-the country twang was an odd addition. Simon says shes forgettable and like musical wallpaper-I tend to agree, but I think she's got another week in her. Maybe. David Archuleta-Long and Winding Road. Excellent song choice and performance. He's really a ballad singer. Not sure if he's IDOL material since he seems so young and so innocent and so naive...time will tell. I do like the fact that he sang the song as written, didn't try to "update" it. Takes a hell of an ego to think you can update or improve on any of these songs. Michael Johns-A Day in the Life. Ok, maybe it is just me, but week after week, this guy coasts along and never really seems to be making any effort to stand out, sing really well, or be interesting. He's coasting on his looks and his accent. And why are people griping about that FOREIGNER Carly and not about Michael since he's from Australia originally??? He's cute, but he's boring and he needs to step up or go home SOON. Brooke White-Here Comes the Sun. She looked like an awkwardly mobile bunch of bananas! Could not get over the goofy ruffly yellow dress and how uncomfortable she looked while tryingto move/dance/swoop around the stage/whatever you called it while singing. The nanny is likeable most of the time, but she got on my nerves standing there agreeing and explaining everything to the judges and to us-why was she given the time to talk and explain and respond when none of the others get that chance? Is she someone's daughter??? David Cook-Day Tripper. The balding Weeble did another good job this week. Not fond of his style, but he does well with it. Not sure if the new facial hair is a good look or just another distraction from the hairline. Did not understand Simon being so snarky about " not as good as YOU thought it was" Carly Smithson-Blackbird. this was truly a confusing performance for me. I love carly and I really enjoyed this song and her vocals. Cant say that I recognize the song at all, but I love her voice and I thought she did well. I did NOT understand Simon being so nasty and critical and I did not think she deserved to be talked to like that. Jason Castro-Michelle. Nice vocal, he was able to walk around the stage without that look of abject fear this time-progress. No real original spin or big notes to praise him for, but he was true to the melody and seemed to be at east with himself. He's a likeable goof-certainly not taking himself too seriously as an ARTISTE. simon said that he was charming and I thiink that's a good word fro Dread-boy, even though his hair is such a mess that he could pass for a troll living under a bridge. Syesha-Yesterday. Big question for me-WHY the evening gown to sing this song? Was it purely a cleavage opp? Hate to see these girls turn to straightening their hair, they never seemto go back to reality and I like her curly hair. Still think she's kind of boring and has no chance, but she's ok. she did a good job tonight. Chikezie-I've Just seen a Face. Some obscure song that i've never heard of at all. His harmonica playing was a desperate act and didnt helop him, but overall he was not too bad. He's getting better and trying harder each week and he's fun to watch even though he seems to sweat a lot (so did Rubin, and he won in Season 2). Weird country vibe, not sure it is was supposed to be that way,or was his take on it. Let him stick to the Luther Vandross realm. Ramiele Malubay-I Should Have Known Better. What's up with the hat. I also nominate this little munchkin as the Princess of Lip Gloss. another strange fashion statement and another adeaute but not great performance. dont know how long she'll last. I dont see her winning! Bottom 3: Kristy Lee, Amanda, and maybe Syesha.....So long Kristy, I think it's your week even though Amanda deserves to go more than you do
